Devizes to
Westminster Canoe Challenge
In Aid of The Forces Children's Trust
Sgt: Tony Richardson APTC
March 22nd 2008 is the date for
the gruesome Devizes to Westminster canoe challenge covering 125 miles,
starting at Devizes and finishing at Westminster Bridge.
Sgt: Tony Richardson (Army Physical
Training Corps) and Partner W02 Martin Corby (Royal Engineers) are set to
complete this ultimate challenge and have been training with Marathon Kayaks. This type of training is completely new to
them both and they can only participate in part time training due to work
commitments. The pair and 2 other crews
from 42 Engineer Regiment (GEO) have been given excellent guidance from the
full time Royal Engineers DW team and experienced coaching staff.
The race starts at Devizes Wiltshire,
through 77 locks via the Kennet & Avon canal eventually meeting the River
Thames which finishes at Westminster Bridge. They aim to cross the finish line within the 24hr mark, meaning
they will be continuously paddling from the morning of Sat 22nd to
the morning of Sunday 23rd March.
This ultimate test of strength, technique
and above all mental ability will be to raise money for a cause worthy military
charity - The Forces Children’s Trust. This charity helps children of all ages
enjoy life to the full after sadly losing their parent in crucial operations
such as Iraq and Afghanistan.
Tony and all participating teams have
commenced training on a positive note and are making full use of the dark
evenings to go for night paddles and dry training using an ergo. Most weekends and spare afternoons you will
find them on the water covering greater distances.

excellent charity which was screened at Christmas time on Noel Edmonds TV
